Hypokalemia-Induced Predisposition to Hepatic Encephalopathy

Hypokalemia precipitates hepatic encephalopathy primarily by increasing systemic hyperammonemia through impaired hepatic ammonia detoxification and increased ammonia generation by peripheral tissues. [1,2] The resulting rise in circulating ammonia increases brain glutamine synthesis, which contributes to astrocyte dysfunction and cerebral edema-related abnormalities in neuronal signaling. [0,1]
